Medications

Cholesterol-lowering medication (generic Lipitor). Reduces LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Take once daily with or without food.

ACE inhibitor for high blood pressure and heart failure. Helps blood vessels relax. Take once daily, preferably at the same time each day.

First-line treatment for Type 2 diabetes. Improves blood sugar control. Take with meals to reduce stomach upset.

Thyroid hormone replacement (generic Synthroid). Treats hypothyroidism. Take on empty stomach 30-60 minutes before breakfast.

Calcium channel blocker for high blood pressure and chest pain. Relaxes blood vessels. Take once daily.

Proton pump inhibitor (generic Prilosec) for acid reflux and GERD. Reduces stomach acid production. Take before meals.

SSRI antidepressant (generic Zoloft) for depression and anxiety disorders. May take 4-6 weeks for full effect. Take once daily.

Fast-acting bronchodilator for asthma and COPD. Relieves wheezing and shortness of breath. Use as needed or before exercise.

Anticonvulsant for nerve pain and seizures. Also used for restless leg syndrome. Take 2-3 times daily as prescribed.

ARB medication for high blood pressure and diabetic kidney protection. Blocks angiotensin II. Take once daily.

Broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic for bacterial infections. Complete full course even if feeling better. Take every 8 hours.

Corticosteroid for inflammation, allergies, and autoimmune conditions. Take with food. Follow taper schedule exactly as prescribed.

Leukotriene receptor antagonist (generic Singulair) for asthma and seasonal allergies. Take once daily in the evening.

Thiazide diuretic (water pill) for high blood pressure and fluid retention. May increase urination. Take in morning.

Statin medication for high cholesterol. Works best when taken in the evening. Part of heart disease prevention.

SSRI antidepressant (generic Lexapro) for depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Take once daily, morning or evening.
